“Ann Skank”: Trivializing and Sexualizing the Holocaust for Halloween [Sociological Images]
At the intersection of the trivializing of horrific violence aimed at ethnic/religious groups and the pornification of American culture, comes this “Ann Skank” costume[…] Yes that is, indeed, a woman dressed up like Anne Frank, the Jewish child who hid from the Nazis for two years, only to be discovered and moved to a concentration camp where she died from Typhus. Her companions are dressed up like Nazi soldiers. The Halloween revelers who made the choice to sexualize and laugh at this 15-year-old victim of the holocaust are graduate students in the Creative Writing program at Florida State University.

All three of them can go straight to hell. Do not pass go; do not collect $200.
I hope their names get blown up on the Internetz soon so that people recognize these FSU pieces of shit and render their yet-unearned MFAs completely worthless for getting any jobs. This is fucking disgusting.
[I am not even gonna have a full-on go-in on the black person in the fucking SS uniform. As far as I’m concerned, that asshole is beyond help, and can stay their ass living in whatever colorblind utopia they think they live in.]
ETA: I see that Sociological Images edited the post and removed their school information, but if you do a search for the school name and “Ann Skank,” the original posting’s the first result.
ETA 2: And for those on the original post and in the reblogs here who are like, “Hey, you’re shaming them! Stop wishing that they can’t get jobs! This isn’t /b/ on 4chan!”
- This wouldn’t have made it onto anybody else’s website if the people in the picture hadn’t dressed up in the costumes, posed for the picture, and posted it online. (Oh, and quick note for the “freedom of expression” trolls: they had every right to wear their ensembles, and I won’t deny them that just because I don’t like the costumes. Just like I have every right to consider them assholes for wearing the costumes, and their future employers have every right to refuse them work for pulling a stunt like this.)
- Most employment in this country, including the sort of places where creative writing MFA or PhD holders would most likely work, is “at will” employment. Meaning, if one or all of the people in the photo is working, their employers are within their bounds to fire them for this, just because. Unless they’re working with a union or they’ve got tenure (damn unlikely). And potential employers (which, once these fools earn their degrees, would probably include grade-school and university administrators) don’t take kindly to this sort of garbage. (Yes, HR departments do check for this kind of stuff.)
- Grown-ass adults who make ill-considered decisions in horrible taste, then post them online, don’t get the overflowing cup of my sympathy. Especially when they’re part of an academic community at the graduate level, where most people are trying to get rid of their past goofy-younger-days Internet trails, rather than making contributions to said trails. And this isn’t so much “goofy youthful fun times” as “really fucking tasteless and offensive.” If you don’t agree with that, then fine. Just don’t post your images of you and your shitty friends dressed in tacky, shameful, unfunny-attempt-at-ironic Halloween costumes where they’d be publicly available. If that’s the only lesson you can glean from this, then good - go be an asshole on your own time, and I’ll save my pissed-off face for something else. You’re welcome.
